How to Configure Kodi for Real 4K Without Buffering

4K playback failing in Kodi is rarely a hardware limitation on modern devices — it’s almost always a settings mismatch between your file, your display and Kodi’s playback engine.

1. Match refresh rate

Settings → Player → Videos → enable “Adjust display refresh rate to match video.” Without this, Kodi plays 24fps content on a 60Hz-locked output, causing judder that looks like buffering.

2. Enable hardware acceleration

Settings → Player → Videos → Processing → confirm hardware acceleration is on for your platform (VDPAU/VAAPI on Linux, DXVA2 on Windows, MMAL on Raspberry Pi). Software decoding a 4K HEVC stream will choke even strong CPUs.

3. Check your storage or network throughput

A 4K HDR remux can run 60-100 Mbps. If you’re streaming over WiFi from a NAS, that’s often the real bottleneck — not Kodi, not your GPU. Wire the connection where you can.

4. Use the right audio passthrough settings

Settings → System → Audio → set passthrough correctly for your receiver (Dolby Digital/DTS/Atmos as supported). Incorrect passthrough settings can cause audio-related stutter that looks like a video buffering issue.

Check our legal addon tier list — some playback issues trace back to an addon’s own streaming implementation, not Kodi’s core player.
